Listing Description

The Vermont Farm & Forest Viability Program provides in-depth, individualized business and transfer planning to Vermont farmers. We focus on long-term, holistic planning to improve management skills, profitability, and support farmers in meeting their goals. The program operates as a network model, with skilled business planners located at partnering agricultural organizations across the state. Last year, participants secured over $5 million in grants/loans. Seventy-three percent of participants grew sales, 65% improved profitability, and 100% increased their business management skills.

The program is free after a $75 enrollment fee, and farmers have access to up to two years of coaching support from their primary business advisor as well as a technical assistance budget. This often covers initial costs for bookkeepers, attorneys, production specialists, and marketing. We focus on working with businesses in year 3 and beyond, and grossing over $15,000. We also fund start-up planning when possible, and run two grant programs for farmers to help implement key projects.
